The family of a man who tragically died from the asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma, received £350,000 compensation after our specialist personal injury lawyers pursued a claim on their behalf.
A fit, healthy individual and a lifelong non-smoker, our client had been looking forward to spending his upcoming retirement with his wife. They had 2 children together and he enjoyed an active lifestyle, including regular cycling, walking, visits to the gym and DIY.
He began to suffer a persistent cough, shortness of breath and fatigue, so consulted his GP and was referred to hospital for tests. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a fatal form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. This is one of several conditions known to be caused by exposure to asbestos, together with asbestosis, pleural thickening, lung cancer and pleural plaques.
During his working life, the deceased was exposed to asbestos in various jobs for different employers. At one stage he worked in the engine and boiler rooms of steam ships, where asbestos was in widespread use, maintaining pumps, pipes and valves covered with asbestos lagging. Other jobs included working on air conditioning systems in ceiling spaces containing asbestos cladding, and repairing valves that had asbestos joints. He was not warned about the dangers of asbestos at the time or provided with protective clothing.
The deceased instructed our personal injury lawyers, who are experts in industrial disease, to assist him in recovering compensation from his former employers.
Sadly, despite undergoing chemotherapy treatment, he passed away before the claim could be concluded, however we were able to secure a substantial sum of damages for his devastated family.
If you or someone close to you is suffering from an asbestos-related illness, it may be possible to make a claim for compensation.
