Misread heart tests spark concerns that patients could have been prescribed medication in error.

3rd February 2006

Hospital Mistake

An inquiry has begun after a cardiac technician at the Fairfield Hospital in Bury informed over 1000 patients that they were suffering from heart conditions in error. He is now no longer employed by the trust.

These patients, who underwent echocardiogram (ECG) tests between 23rd May and 7th December 2005, have now been informed in writing of the mistake.

Patient Review

The Pennine Acute Trust, who are responsible for the hospital, have begun a review of the patient notes for those affected. This is expected to take several weeks to complete and some patients have already been invited to attend review appointments.

There is a possibility that some patients may have been prescribed medication that they do not need, however no instances of this have been confirmed so far.
