A man who suffered a serious health problem due to incorrectly dispensed medication was assisted by our expert personal injury lawyers in making a clinical negligence claim.
Our client visited his GP for a repeat prescription of his usual anti-depressant medication, then went to collect it from his local pharmacy. After taking several doses he began to suffer severe headaches, nausea, dizziness, disorientation and trouble sleeping.
Initially he did not realise that these symptoms could be related to the medication, however some days later he noticed that the label on the outside of the box did not match the box itself or the leaflet it contained. He had actually been given a medication used to reduce high blood pressure in error and, after consulting NHS Direct, was told to attend hospital immediately. He saw a cardiovascular consultant, was admitted for 2 days for treatment and continued to suffer some symptoms for almost a year.
The incident was potentially life-threatening, especially as he was not only taking incorrect medication, but also a very high dosage. This was due to the instructions on the label being those for an altogether different drug, for which more tablets would be taken daily.
The claimant reported the mistake to the pharmacy and they acknowledged their error, but did not take any further action. He therefore instructed our lawyers, who have a wealth of experience in medical negligence cases, to represent him in a claim for compensation.
We submitted a claim and secured an admission from the pharmacy that they were responsible for dispensing the incorrect medication. We successfully recovered a settlement of damages for the claimant in respect of the unnecessary pain and suffering he experienced.
