In a recent case, our specialist personal injury lawyers assisted a woman who suffered a fall on a public bridge that was dangerously slippery. We made a personal injury claim against the local authority on her behalf and she received compensation.
Our client was walking across a wooden footbridge over a river during the winter. The wooden surface did not have any anti-slip coating, there were no signs to warn that the bridge was slippery and the handrails at the side of the bridge were not at a suitable height.
She slipped and fell, suffering a dislocated and badly fractured wrist as a result. The injury resulted in some permanent restrictions in the use of her wrist, which was altered in appearance, and she was left with some ongoing pain and discomfort.
The claimant felt that her accident could have been avoided if the relevant safety measures were taken by the council responsible for the maintenance of the bridge. She was also aware that other people had slipped in the past. She therefore instructed our lawyers to pursue an injury claim on her behalf.
It was discovered that the bridge had actually been inspected by the Council prior to our client’s accident and was found to be slippery, so it was recommended that the wood be given an anti-slip coating similar to another bridge nearby. Despite this, no action had been taken.
The Council denied liability for the accident and refused to put forward an offer of compensation. We continued to pursue the case against them however and we were able to secure a settlement of £9,000 in damages on our client’s behalf, after rejecting previous, lower offers.
If you suffer a personal injury as the result of an accident in a public place, which you believe was caused by the negligence of someone else, you may be entitled to make a compensation claim.
