An airport worker injured in a fall at work recovered compensation recently, in a claim handled by our specialist personal injury lawyers.
At the time of his accident, the claimant was unloading luggage from an aeroplane. There were no steps or conveyors available that would fit the plane and no other equipment was provided, so he had to climb up the “dolly” (a vehicle with a cage mounted on it to hold baggage) to reach the hold. He climbed into the hold to move the bags near to the entrance, then climbed down onto the dolly and stood on it as he reached up to retrieve them. This was common practice.
Unfortunately, whilst climbing back down onto the dolly the claimant lost his footing and fell around 8 feet, first onto the dolly and then to the floor. As a result of this accident at work he suffered injuries to his neck, back and elbow. Our client had to take a considerable amount of time off from work and suffered a loss of earnings, as well as incurring costs for medication and travel expenses for hospital appointments.
Our lawyers pursued a personal injury claim against the claimant’s employer on his behalf, on the basis that the defendants failed to provide suitable equipment and instruction for his work to be carried out safely.
Liability was admitted and a settlement of damages in excess of £13,000 was negotiated in respect of the claimant’s injuries and losses.
If you have been injured in an accident at work, perhaps due to a lack of health and safety measures or whilst performing a manual handling task as in this case, you may be entitled to claim compensation.
