Our specialist personal injury lawyers recently secured compensation for a man who suffered a serious thumb injury in an accident at work.
At the time of his workplace accident, our client was preparing a ship for painting by cleaning the surface with highly pressurised water. He tripped on a hose and lost his balance, as water mist in the area made it difficult to see the hose. He let go of the trigger on the water blaster, which should have stopped the flow immediately, but unfortunately it did not.
The jet of water cut deeply into our client’s thumb, even though he was wearing the heavy duty gloves provided, and this caused a severe wound. He was treated at hospital and was unable to continue working in his normal capacity. His injury also meant that he needed assistance with household tasks and personal care during his recovery. After the wound healed he was left with scarring, nerve damage, restricted movement and reduced grip strength and he required intensive physiotherapy.
Our client found out after the accident that the wrong type of nozzle had been attached to the water blaster and that this was the reason the flow did not stop when he released the trigger. It was also discovered that a colleague had a ‘near miss’ in a similar incident. He therefore felt that his employer was to blame for his personal injury and instructed our expert lawyers to assist him in a compensation claim.
We began the case and the other side admitted liability. We then supplied medical evidence of our client’s injury, however they did not put forward an offer of compensation, so we had to commence court proceedings. An offer was eventually made before the case went to trial, which our client accepted. He received £4,500 in damages.
