Injury at Work Due to Incorrect Gloves

3rd August 2006

Our lawyers recently succeeded in claiming compensation for a client injured in an accident at work, caused by his employers’ failure to provide suitable personal protective equipment (PPE).

Injury at Work

A plumber employed by Cardiff City Council suffered an injury at work when removing the plastic film from a sink. He was holding the sink with one hand whilst pulling the film free with the other when the sink slipped.

Prior to the job he had requested some protective ‘reflex’ gloves from the store. These aid grip and protect the hands, yet still enable the user to handle objects carefully. He had been told that none were available.

Personal Protective Equipment

Despite the fact that the claimant was told the protective wear he required was not available, the gloves were in stock. They were only provided to scaffolders however and plumbers were not able to use them

Following the incident, the reflex gloves were made available to all plumbers employed by Cardiff City Council.

Employer Liability

It was found that Cardiff City Council breached the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992. As a result the personal injury claim was successful and the claimant was awarded damages for his injury at work.
