Calls for Tougher Corporate Manslaughter Bill on Day of Remembrance

27th April 2006

Friday 28th April is International Workers’ Memorial Day, held to remember those killed in workplace accidents. Each year, events are organised to focus on the causes of injuries at work, industrial illnesses and fatal accidents, with the aim of reducing the risks to employees.

Campaigns for Safer Workplaces

Trade unions worldwide are campaigning to improve health and safety in places of work and ensure that employers are held responsible. This year, the main themes are ‘ban asbestos worldwide’ and ‘union workplaces – safer workplaces’.

Many people are injured or die each year in preventable accidents that occur as the result of gross negligence on the part of their employers. Even in some cases where the court has ruled an incident an ‘unlawful killing’, it is still not possible to bring manslaughter charges. The families of some of these victims, along with the trade unions, are urging the Government to make the new Corporate Manslaughter bill stricter on these employers to ensure that irresponsible companies can be prosecuted.
