Compensation Awarded in Occupational Dermatitis Claim

4th December 2009

A factory employee who developed occupational dermatitis due to her working conditions received compensation recently, in an industrial disease claim handled by our specialist personal injury lawyers.

Exposure to Hazardous Substance

During her working day, our client came into contact with glycerine extensively. She would have to repeatedly submerge her hands in a tray of glycerine to complete her work and it also dripped down into her footwear and covered many of the surfaces and items within her work area.

Our client developed itchy, weeping rashes on her hand and forearm, heels and stomach. She sought medical advice and was diagnosed with contact dermatitis. As a result of the condition she could no longer continue in her previous role and she became sensitive to other substances that she had no problems with before, such as detergents and cosmetics.

Industrial Disease Compensation

The claimant felt that her employer was responsible for her condition, as they failed to warn her about the risk of developing a skin condition due to contact with glycerine and did not provide adequate personal protective equipment or health and safety advice.

We pursued a personal injury claim on her behalf and it was necessary to commence court proceedings. A settlement of £12,000 in damages was secured in respect of our client’s condition and her loss of earnings.
