An electrician who was exposed to asbestos at work has received £10,000 in provisional damages after developing a debilitating disease.
The 76-year-old man, who does not wish to be named, was diagnosed with asbestos related pleural thickening due to working as an electrician for Peter Marsh & Sons in Bootle during the early 1960s.
The grandfather of five was diagnosed with pleural thickening three years ago after he complained to his doctor about breathlessness.
Pleural thickening can be caused by asbestos. He was exposed to asbestos while maintaining machines and recycling bags which had contained asbestos.
His employment was later transferred to ABC Ploythene but he continued to work at the Peter Marsh & Sons’ premises in Bootle until 1967.
He was represented by The Legal Line's asbestos claims specialists Thompsons Solicitors who achieved a provisional settlement which allows him to make a further claim for compensation if his condition worsens in the future due to asbestos related disease.
He said at the time he had no idea of the danger asbestos posed to his health.
He said: “I am angry that I was exposed to something so dangerous and I wasn’t given protection to prevent it from affecting my health in the future.
“My worst fear is I develop mesothelioma and I am relieved the settlement means I can claim further compensation in the future if the worst happens.”
Diana Fos, head of Thompsons specialist asbestos team in Liverpool said: “Pleural thickening can be a debilitating disease and often caused by negligent exposure to asbestos in the workplace.
“The settlement enables the client to have the benefit of some compensation now while preserving his right to claim further damages if he should sufferer serious deterioration due to progression of his pleural thickening or develops other asbestos related conditions including mesothelioma and asbestos induced lung cancer.”
