As a result of exposure to asbestos dust whilst working for Delon Tools and Longs Foundry, William Croft developed pleural thickening, an asbestos related disease. He was employed by the company, based in Chertsey, Surrey, during the 1960s and lawyers acting on his behalf are now seeking to trace his former co-workers.
Pleural thickening is one of a number of illnesses caused by asbestos exposure. The membrane around the lungs becomes scarred and thickened, making it constricted and less elastic. This can cause shortness of breath and fluid on the lungs and may be an indication that further asbestos related conditions could develop.
Diseases caused by asbestos can take many years, often decades to develop. It is estimated that, by 2010, asbestos related illnesses will cause 10,000 deaths each year.
During his time as a toolmaker with Delon Tools and Longs Foundry, Mr Croft, formerly of Orchard Way in Addlestone, Surrey, was exposed to large amounts of asbestos dust. The dust would blow into the factory from the foundry and he described the environment as being ‘like working in a snowstorm’
At the time of Mr Croft’s employment, the company and foundry were owned by a Mr Longleather. Unfortunately, he is now deceased and searches by Mr Croft’s lawyers have failed to track down the company’s insurers. Tracing the insurers is essential to any compensation claim for an asbestos related illness.
Anyone who has suffered an illness or injury as the result of someone else’s negligence, as in Mr Croft’s case where his former employer failed to protect him form a hazardous substance in the workplace, should be entitled to claim compensation.
It is very important that sufferers of illnesses like pleural thickening are able to recover compensation, as their condition can worsen leaving them disabled.
The Legal Line’s lawyers are specialists in industrial disease cases, having recovered damages for many innocent victims of illnesses caused by exposure to asbestos.
