Our expert industrial disease lawyers recently acted for an engineering fitter in a compensation claim for vibration white finger, now known as hand arm vibration syndrome, or HAVS.
As part of his job, our client was required to work with vibrating tools almost continuously throughout his working day for a number of years. These tools included angle grinders, air saws, linishers, riveting guns and drills.
He began to suffer problems with his fingers and was diagnosed with HAVS. This condition is caused by exposure to excessive vibration and affects the circulation of the hands and fingers, causing tingling, numbness and sometimes pain and a loss of dexterity.
The claimant approached our lawyers to assist him in recovering damages. A claim was made against his employer, as they failed to take sufficient measures to protect him from the risks .
Precautions that can be taken to help avoid HAVS include the provision of training on how to use vibrating tools safely, the use of personal protective equipment, job rotation and regular breaks to avoid prolonged use of the tools and providing adequate health and safety information for employees.
His employer admitted liability and our lawyers were able to secure a settlement of £12,500 compensation on his behalf.
If you or a member of your family is suffering from a personal injury or industrial illness caused by the negligence of someone else, you may be entitled to make a compensation claim.
