Our expert industrial disease lawyers recently assisted the widow of a mesothelioma victim in recovering compensation, in respect of the death of her late husband from an asbestos-related illness.
There are several conditions that can be caused by exposure to asbestos, including asbestosis, pleural thickening and mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a fatal form of cancer, which most commonly affects the lungs but can also occur in the abdomen or around the heart.
Our client’s husband began to suffer breathing problems, then became very unwell and his condition deteriorated rapidly. He was admitted to hospital, where he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, but he sadly died around 6 weeks later, leaving behind his wife and son.
The period when our client’s husband was exposed to asbestos was during his time in the Merchant Navy. He worked as an engineer and his role meant that he spent a lot of time in the engine rooms of ships, where there were pipes lagged with asbestos. Whilst working he would disturb the lagging and thus inhaled the dust and fibres as he was not provided with protective equipment.
Our lawyers were appointed to act in a compensation claim against his former employer and recovered a settlement of £80,000 in damages for his widow.
If you or a member of your family is suffering from an asbestos-related illness, or a loved one has passed away, you may be entitled to make a claim for compensation.
