Personal Injury Claim for Fall Down Manhole

25th April 2012

A contractor fell into a manhole that had not been adequately covered and suffered back and neck injuries. We represented him in a personal injury claim and he received compensation.

Accident at Work

Our client was walking across an outdoor area at a premises where he was working, to access some equipment. He stepped onto a piece of plywood which, unbeknown to him, was covering an open manhole. The plywood snapped because it was not strong enough to take the weight of someone walking across it and he fell into the hole.

The accident caused him to suffer a personal injury. His neck and back were badly strained and very painful, as a result of which he could not attend work for 4 weeks. During this time he had to take prescription medication to help with the pain and he could not do anything strenuous.

Compensation Claim

The injured worker approached our specialist personal injury solicitors for help with a compensation claim. The manhole should have been covered with something more suitable, such as a metal cover, or there should have been signs or barriers in place to warn people about the hazard.

We pursued a claim against the company responsible for the site and they admitted liability for the accident. Our client received in excess of £5,500 in respect of his injuries, loss of earnings and his expenses related to the accident.
