Latest Statistics Show Sharp Increase in Deaths Related to Hospital Infection

6th March 2006

Cause for Concern

Deaths from MRSA, the antibiotic-resistant infection often contracted by hospital patients, increased considerably between 2003 and 2004, a recent study by the Office for National Statistics has shown.

The figures indicated that approximately 360 people per year die as a direct result of MRSA, and that it is recorded on around two death certificates per thousand in England and Wales, either as the cause of death or as a contributing factor.

This shows a rise of around 22% on previous years and a cause of great concern to the healthcare industry and its governing bodies.

Calls for Improvement

The most effective ways of preventing the spread of the MRSA infection are simple measures to improve the general standards of hygiene and cleanliness on hospital wards.

Stringent hand hygiene, regular cleaning of wards and their facilities with disinfectants, careful isolation of infected patients and the use of disposable gloves and gowns are all essential in the fight against MRSA.

Michael Summers, the chairman of the Patients Association said:

“"It is clear that MRSA and hospital infections are winning the war in many of our wards."

He added that simple hygiene measures, such as washing hands, could have a huge impact and should be taken by everyone in hospitals."
